TrainSpeed size: 2 1/2 x 1 7/8 inches

The unit is designed to be mounted behind the layout facade, or behind the layout's control panel.  If you use a painted Plexiglas control panel no rectangular hole will be needed for the display (leave a clear window so the display can be seen).

The unit will report speeds of up to 150 MPH accurately.  At speeds above this the resolution suffers.  If you are interested in faster speeds we have a special order unit that will work well at speeds above 300 MPH.  Contact us for the details.

The standard TrainSpeed comes with optical sensors that use the ambient light in the room to detect the train's movement.  Note that the direction from which the light falls on your layout may cause false triggering.  For example, if the light source is located in the aisles a person walking by may throw a shadow over the sensors causing them to output the scale speed of the person walking by!

We have also adapted reflective IR sensors to the TrainSpeed.  These sensors required a software change, so original TrainSpeeds will not work with the new sensor assemblies.  If your TrainSpeed has a blue dot on the microprocessor then it is capable of using the new sensors (TS-IR).  If you wish to have your older TrainSpeed updated contact us (Sales@trainspeed.com).  These IR sensors will work with Z, N and HO scales, but larger scales may not trigger them consistently (The ideal detection distance is about 6 mm).  There are also some other limitations.  For example, if an HO train contains a string of black bottomed frameless tank cars these cars may cause the IR sensor to trigger again as they passes over the sensor.  This is because the curved black bottom will make the sensor think there isn't a train over the sensor.  When the tank car's truck now crosses the sensor the TrainSpeed will trigger again.  Both sensors will need to be 'fooled' in this way at the same time for this re-triggering to occur.  So, while the TrainSpeed will now work in the dark, be warned that some inconsistent results may occur.
